PREVENTING FIRES WHILE LASHING
Understanding adhesive risks and how to avoid accidents.
Yes, you read that right. Fires while lashing! 🔥 Don’t worry, it is super rare, but we want every appointment to be safe, cozy, and stress-free. Since lash artist work with flammable products, heat, and small studios, a few simple habits can make a big difference.
How Can Lash Glue Cause Fires?
Most lash adhesives are cyanoacrylate-based and cure through a chemical reaction with moisture. While they aren’t highly flammable on their own, they can become a fire risk under certain conditions.
When lash glue comes into contact with materials like cotton or fabric, it can create a rapid heat reaction that may cause smoking or, in rare cases, ignition. Storing adhesive near heat sources, open flames, or flammable products like alcohol-based cleansers can also increase risk.
Tips to Prevent Fires While Lashing
Store products properly.
Lash glues, removers, and alcohol-based cleaners can catch fire if stored incorrectly. Keep them cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Following storage instructions helps your products last longer and keeps your studio safer. Make sure cords, towels, and other materials are not crowing your work area or touching heat sources. A tidy space makes your setup look professional and reduces risk.
Use lint-free wipes.
These wipes help you wipe your adhesive nozzles every time you dispense a new drop of glue and burn your nozzle. Since they are lint-free, they prevent a fire hazard! Never use any type of cotton to wipe off glue as it is exothermic and may burn the cotton. Cotton + lash glue = fire. It’s also used for wiping your client’s eyes when they tear up.
Dispose of adhesives properly.
This is the most important one! Lash glue is flammable, and even a small amount left on a paper towel or in a cup can be dangerous. Lash extension glue bottles and glue rings must be cleaned of any glue contamination. Do not pour it down the drain or trash it loose! Polymerize the glue first:
Water method: Add a small amount of water to the glue to fully polymerize it (turn it from liquid to solid). Glue rings can be placed in a jar or water.
Drying method: Squeeze leftover glue onto a non-porous surface like a tile, jade stone, or metal sheet and let it sit for at least 24 hours until completely solid.
Once fully hardened, the glue is no longer reactive and should go into a hazardous waste bin or follow local regulations for flammable/chemical waste. Empty, clean glue bottles and glue rings can then be placed in a bin for non-biodegradable waste or recycled if your area accepts them.
For expired adhesives, always follow the same disposable process (check out our post about expired adhesives for more information)!
At the end of the day, lash appointments are all about creativity, confidence, and a little self-care, but safety always comes first. Taking a few simple steps, like properly disposing of expired glue, cleaning your bottles and rings, and staying mindful of heat, keeps your studio safe and stress-free. A little care goes a long way, and it’s worth it to know that every appointment can be both comfortable and safe.
Safety stuff isn’t always glamorous, but it’s super important! Thank you for tuning in! ♡ If you have any questions, please let us know!
